Basically it is a mini computer that streams content. So you can watch Netfilx on your tv instead of your laptop. Or you can put together a slide show of your pictures from your latest vacation and share them through your tv.

Media centres can take your tv and turn it into a smart tv (internet enabled). Examples of commerial media centres are ROKU, Apple TV, Raspberry Pi, …..You can stream movies, your pictures and music from these devices through your TV or stereo system.
